Selectafont Limited - sold to the right type by Turner Butler

Having acquired the business, an online retailer of ink cartridges and computer consumables from an acquaintance almost as a favour, and building it up to a very respectable turnover and profitability, the Owners discovered the business, although being managed at arms length in terms of the day-to-day operation, was taking up far too much of their management time and diverting them from their other core and more profitable business interests.

With the opportunity within the reach of both private purchasers looking to run their own business as well as existing operators in the marketplace, the Owners were in danger of being overrun with interest with almost fifty prospective purchasers approaching Turner Butler during the short period of marketing the business which included national press advertising, business for sale web portals and targeted mailings to competitor and complementary organisations.

By careful screening to identify the most suitable candidates, the workload of selling the business was minimised for the Seller and a deal completed with an existing operator within the sector. With the transfer of the assets completed over a weekend and a minimal period of handover, the Owners were able to bank a healthy return on their original investment but perhaps more importantly free up their time to concentrate on their other business activities.

World of Powerboats Successfully Sold by Turner Butler - a fast moving sale!

Having taken control of this longstanding title in the performance powerboating sector and re-launched it in print format following a previous Owner's decision to scale it back to a web based digital magazine reducing both its appeal and revenue base, one of the Owners was offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to pursue other business opportunities abroad.

Perfectly exemplifying the extraordinary reach of Turner Butler's advertising, within just two weeks of commencing marketing, an approach was received from a US based entrepreneur with significant worldwide publishing interests to absorb the title into his existing portfolio.

Not only a swift and entirely satisfactory outcome financially but even better for the previous Owner was the opportunity, negotiated as part of the deal, to stay with the business whilst still realising his ambitions to work internationally.

Layburn Tools Limited - where chiselling away at potential buyers paid off

Nearing retirement age, it was time for the Owners to sell their tool, industrial supplies and Workwear business which has been a fixture in the town for many years. Very much acting as a one stop shop and servicing many local businesses and a number of power stations in the area - welding machines or consumables, compressors, hand, machine or power tools, maintenance or janitorial products, fixings and fastenings, safety and security products, measuring equipment, PPE products or the latest in Workwear, this business supplies the lot.

After several 'false starts' which even included the postponing of the due diligence on behalf of one buyer just minutes before it was due to occur, the dogged determination of Turner Butler's Marketing Department paid off following highly targeted personal approaches to the Owners of some of the major players in the industry with the business sold to one of the fastest growing organisations in the sector.

After a short handover period the Owners were left to enjoy their highly deserved retirement and enjoy the proceeds from the sale of their lifetime's work.

Caf Ho Sete - an 'Express - o' sale

Occupying a prime position in the concourse of one of the major shopping centres in Surrey, this was a very well established and profitable business - but just a little too far from home for an Owner that now had a young and growing family.

No ordinary concession and benefitting from a very favourable lease, the Owner had put very careful thought into developing the business into major brand, with a view to rolling the concept out through other major shopping centre locations in the South East of England - with a design, shopfit and corporate identity to rival any of the major High Street coffee shops.

With the assistance of a very carefully crafted marketing plan involving national press advertising and website listings on the major business for sale portals a buyer was identified who had just recently missed out on the purchase of a similar Shopping centre based outlet. With all the due diligence areas already prepared, the transaction was completed in an amazing ten weeks from initial marketing - with barely enough time for the new Owner to have a cup of coffee before the onrush of the all important pre-Christmas trade.

Camberley Plumbing & Heating

Established in 1977 this independent, family-run business was one of the largest bathroom, shower and heating groups in the South of England.

Starting from just one flagship store the group had grown organically and by acquisition to a size that incorporated four locations straddling the M3, south and west of London with over 25,000 square feet of displays and literally hundreds of bathroom and heating ideas.

Bringing it to market was a difficult decision for the three main shareholders - all at very different stages of their working life.

Within just one month of Turner Butler bringing the company onto the market, an approach was made for the business from the Grafton Group, one of the largest plumbers merchanting groups in Europe. Following detailed and protracted negotiations which included the appointment by Turner Butler of Richard Barnett of Cawdery, Kaye, Fireman, Taylor (CKFT), one of the fastest growing commercial legal practices in London, to act on behalf of their Clients, a deal was finally concluded enabling two of the shareholders to slip into retirement with the third taking up a negotiated appointment to remain within the organisation.

Boat charter business - re-launched under new Ownership

Having established his boat charter business based in Brighton Marina in 1989, the Vendor was quite sceptical as to who would be interested in purchasing a business involved in such diverse customer activities as charter fishing, hen and stag partying and even the scattering of ashes by bereaved relatives in the English Channel!. The scepticism was heightened by the fact that any buyer would need to have a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Motor) Licence endorsed for commercial use in order to run the business or at least the propensity to train for one.

With the full might of the Turner and Butler marketing plan the very first and only lead required (just one will do!) was generated within just a couple of months of the business coming to market with the deal sealed a couple of months later than that. Bought and sold by Accountants by profession, payment was made by invoice, reducing much of the accounting and legal red tape and of course costs involved in the deal, enabling the vendor to literally sail off in the sunset in his other boat to an enjoyable retirement on the West coast of France.

Hampshire Interior Design Company

Being an established and very well known personality within the interior design sector and with a thriving business with several employees key to its future success requiring to be kept in place in the run up to and indeed after the sale, confidentiality was the key criteria in the sale of this business.

After several false starts, with acceptable offers often derailed by the somewhat onerous nature of the terms of the transfer of the lease on the High Street retail premises occupied by the business, a deal was negotiated very close to the original Asking Price and finally concluded some twelve months after the business was brought to market and in a way that ensured that the announcement of the sale to the employees was completely controlled by our Client.

With the negotiation of an extended handover period, the original Owner was able to conclude several projects in progress at the time of the deal as well as giving time to the new Owners to re-locate back to the UK, avail themselves of the significant expertise and experience of our Client in running the business and secure the loyalty of all the staff employed within it.

Local free distribution newspaper - sold but not given away!

Having conceived the idea themselves and quite literally run it from their kitchen table for a number of years the Owners of a local free distribution newspaper wished to free themselves from the obligations of hard and fast publication dates and to retire and find time to enjoy much more of the Cornish countryside.

Launched over twenty-five years earlier the publication had an established circulation of 22,000 and a geographical coverage of 180 square miles including three large market towns, having become a valuable mouthpiece for the local community and an essential advertising medium for the many businesses, large and small operating in the area.

Following just its first appearance in the Turner Butler ad in the Sunday Times the Owners, who coincidentally were planning a trip to visit friends near London, were invited to the offices, in Surrey, of one of the UK's leading regional newspaper groups for what they thought was just a preliminary chat about the newspaper.

To their amazement the meeting concluded with the signing of Heads of Agreement and a deal agreed at very close to one year's advertising revenues plus the value of the Balance Sheet, leaving them to plan their retirement on the train journey home and to gradually hand over the reins during the production of the next few issues.

Portable accommodation business

Specialising in the sale or hire of high quality portable accommodation, the members of this family business wished to dispose of it to enable them to pursue other business interests.

Having developed a very detailed Sales Memorandum carefully written to disguise the identity of the business for sale and maintain confidentiality from Clients, Suppliers and competitors, the first stage was to identify likely buyers from those businesses already operating within the trade. Having owned the business for eleven of its twenty-five years of operation the Vendors were able to call upon their excellent knowledge of the trade and were able to assist Turner Butler in drawing up an initial list of targets.

By profiling this target list Turner Butler was able to widen the net considerably and approach not only those thought to be hot prospects but other interested potentially interested parties. With a number of parties declaring interest as a result of this exercise the price was driven up during the detailed negotiations handled by Turner Butler, a price far higher than the initial offer was finally struck, to the great satisfaction of the Vendors.

Surrey bridal wear and accessories retailer - sold to the girl next door

Having been established as a home based operation before moving into High Street premises, the unique selling point of this business, a thriving bridal wear and accessories retailer, was the absolute top quality personal service provided by the Owner to brides and their families in the lead up to the 'big' day.

With such an approach, the business had performed consistently well over the ten or so years of its operation, but how saleable was a business so reliant on the current Owner, anxious to release herself from the business to spend more time with her newly retired partner?

Ironically, the Turner Butler marketing plan encompassing national financial broadsheet advertising, businesses for sale websites on the world-wide-web and national and international mailings to its extensive database of investors identified a buyer within the same Surrey village as the outlet itself. Already knowing the excellent reputation the business had within the area, the investor keenly a deal was completed within 6 months of the business going on sale at a figure very close to the original Asking Price - a marriage made in heaven.

Interior design consultancy with prestigious retail outlet - sold to a buyer with designs on Central London premises

Established in the mid 1990's in SW3, this very prestigious business, an Interior Design service and retailer of European and Asian furniture, Objets d'Art, soft furnishings, textiles and items antique and new had been commissioned to work in both the commercial and residential sectors, completing projects as far afield as Kuwait City, Bali, the Bahamas, Hong Kong and Indonesia. As well as domestic households, this business had completed projects for international banks, hotel chains, resorts and show houses on new developments in the UK and abroad.

This business was fashioned very much in the image of its Interior Designer Owner who was seeking to move into retirement, with the potential risk to new Owners of the possibility of the business fading with her exit.

Focussing very much on the prime retail position of the premises, located within one of the most fashionable areas of Central London, the marketing plan devised by Turner Butler to specifically identify a trade buyer looking to move in to Central London, generated a number of leads and in particular one from a business well established in the interior design sector and with its own widespread customer base. After lengthy negotiations, a deal was completed to include the stock and the goodwill in the business as well as a premium for the lease itself, enabling the Owner to commence a well deserved retirement.

Aromatherapy sold to major PLC in March
Maximum Consideration not disclose
Owners retained to run business

The owners instructed Turner Butler to find a buyer for their aromatherapy company that is based close to their home.
The company was established in 1993. After seven years of hard work, often late into the evening and at weekends the owners had built the sales of the company to 659,000 a year.

The company was losing money at a worrying rate. Showing losses before taxation of 33,600 supported by net assets of only 15,600 the owners felt it was time to relieve themselves of the financial worries and concerns that come with managing and owning their own business.

The owners called in an agent and were concerned with the valuation provided and the demands for advance payments and fees from these agents.

The owners then made the decision to call Turner Butler Britain's business brokers on 0800 028 9999.

The owners asked Turner Butler for an appraisal of the company and were happily surprised and elated when Turner Butler suggested a selling price of over twice the amount of the previous agents valuations with no advance fees what so ever.

Instructing Turner Butler is a decision that has secured the financial future of the owners, not was the sale successful but also totally tax efficient thanks to tax advice provided by advisors recommended by Turner Butler.

The owners will remain in the business and drive its future growth. Its aromatherapy and natural skincare products are available from a number of major retailers and through therapists, salons and independent stockiest. When considering selling a business, one of the biggest concerns for any business owner trading in a niche sector is often thought to be the confining nature of that sector's own environment.

Historic Cinesounds library sold to The Tape Gallery
Consideration not disclosed
Library of Four million unique sounds saved for the nation

During December 2000 Dennis Rodger one of the world's greatest sound recordists, decided to sell the Cinesounds Library, a vast collection of sound recordings he had made and bought during his 45 year career

The unique sound library of almost four million film sound recordings, part of the United Kingdoms heritage, had been closed and put into storage at Elstree studios some three years earlier.

The sound library had been offered to the National Sound Archive who lacked the funds to buy it. Dennis had received offers from abroad but didn't want the historic collection to leave Britain.

Turner Butler was asked to appraise the library at Elstree studios and suggested a substantial asking price. The sound recordings had been used in many major films including the James Bond series of films, "Les Miserables", Ghandi, Chaplin, Entrapment and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

The Turner Butler research department found a ready buyer in Lloyd Billings of the Tape Gallery in London's Soho, a company that is responsible for providing the sound tracks to a host of ads, as well as countless short films and rock albums.

Lloyd is well aware of the historical record the library will be able to provide in the future. Though the selling price achieved by Turner Butler was not disclosed, it can be revealed it was over seven times higher than the best offer Dennis had received previously from overseas.

Specialised vending service sold to private purchaser in December
Consideration not disclosed

Our client, who requires discretion, had built from a single machine in 1996 a business of 700-sited vending machines. The business was run from a small office with the help of one rounds man.

The business was sold with an immediate strong cash flow and no lean years. The income started as soon as the purchase was completed as the machines are located in 600 pubs and restaurants. There are 700 condom, mint and tampon vending machines. People patronised the vending machines day in and day out through times of recession and depression, as well as times of inflation.

The seller had placed the business with another transfer agent with no success, some purchasers were introduced but they lacked sufficient funds to proceed with the deal.

Our client was very disappointed as he had paid the agent an advance fee but felt the sale process was going nowhere.

The seller then decided to call Turner Butler who successful introduced a number of pre checked purchasers which led to a fast sale with a very content seller and a delighted purchaser.

The vending business continues to grow at the rate of over 10% per year with no end in sight.

As these vending machines are already located, they do most of the work. They are always on the job, displaying and offering the products for sale 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On the average it takes about 10 minutes, to restock products and collect all of the accumulated money for each machine. Vending machines are "silent salesman" They demand no wages and require only re-stocking of fresh supplies on a regular basis.

Though the selling price achieved by Turner Butler was not disclosed, it can be revealed it was over 50% higher than the valuation placed by the first unsuccessful transfer agents.
